Awards Night

On Thursday May 18th we were honoured to have past pupil Ann Marie Tomchak (Nee McNerney) visit the school and speak to the students about her five years in Mean Scoil Mhuire and her career to date. Ms Hardiman introduced Ann Marie to the audience recalling how at school she contributed to all aspects of school life – the academics, art, sport and music. After her Leaving Cert Ann Marie studied communications in DIT and went on to study a masters in journalism in DCU. She has worked with RTE, BBC and radio Netherlands both as a presenter and as a producer. She is currently UK editor of digital media platform Mashable. Ann Marie talked about her school exchange programme to Spain and how fond memories of that time have remained with her. She impressed on the students, the importance in this digital age, of learning key skills as their ‘job may not yet be invented ’. She also remembered Mrs Butler’s mantra that ‘a little manners goes a long way’ and emphasised how this simple message has stood her in good stead throughout her life. Ann Marie paid tribute to her parents who were both in the audience, saying they were always her greatest supporters. She finished her presentation by telling the students to always be themselves, use their own accent and that ‘authenticity is king’. Before her departure Shauna Tarmey and Ms Hardiman presented her with a boquet of flowers. The school would like to thank Ann Marie for taking time out of her busy schedule to come back to visit and inspire us all at Mean Scoil Mhuire. We wish her continued success in her career.

Ms Mulrennan and Ms Lyons presented Student of the Year awards and Runner-Up awards to students in each year. This year a new award- the Endeavour Award, was presented to the student in each year who made an exceptional effort in her studies and in all other areas of school life, such as attendance, uniform, helpfulness towards fellow students and staff. Mrs Mc Grath, sixth year Year Head, announced the overall Student of the Year Award and former Deputy Principal Una Byrne presented her perpetual trophy to Marie Lynch amid much excitement. Congratulations to Marie and to the other nominees: Viola Callaghan, Katie Morrissey and Lisa Compton. Well done to Olivia Whelan, Rebecca Banet, Mr MacAodha and the sixth year traditional group who provided the musical entertainment for the night.
